Art is always on the agenda in Vienna. Once summer ends, events for culture fans start to come thick and fast. Highlights include curated by_vienna, Parallel Vienna, viennacontemporary, the Long Night of Museums, Art & Antique and Vienna Art Week.
Vienna’s fall culture jam gets under way with the curated by_vienna gallery festival. The idea behind the project: international curators present exhibitions in leading Viennese galleries focusing on a different theme each year. Curated by_vienna is supported by the Vienna Business Agency and its creative centre departure.
Parallel Vienna shines a light on emerging and established contemporary art. The event – a mixture of an art show, exhibition, gallery and studio – plays out in empty buildings in the city.
Meanwhile, the viennacontemporary art fair is dedicated to contemporary art from Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Around 100 galleries participate in the event, which also features performances, temporary exhibitions and discussions with the artists themselves. The Marxhalle in the third district hosts the fair.
During the Long Night of Museums a single ticket acts as a passe-partout for around 100 Viennese museums, galleries and cultural institutions between 6pm and 1am. In addition to exhibitions and art shows, the event also features discussions with artists, readings and live music. The Long Night ticket doubles up as a free pass for the special shuttle bus and the Viennese public transportation network.
For the 49th time Vienna will host the Art & Antique art, antiques and design fair. This event at the Hofburg is a collector’s paradise offering a huge variety of high quality paintings, sculptures, furniture, graphic works, arts and crafts, jewelry, designer items, carpets and much more besides. Last year the event attracted around 50 galleries and art dealers from Austria and abroad.
Vienna Art Week offers a packed programme of podium discussions, talks, interviews with artists, special guided tours, installations, interventions and performances. For a whole week it transforms Vienna into a mecca for art lovers and experts from all over the world. Around 90 partners, including the city’s leading museums and galleries as well as independent exhibition venues and alternative spaces, will stage a combined total of more than 200 events for art fans.
For seven whole days Vienna will be given over to exploring, experiencing, celebrating and trading art. Last year’s event drew 35,000 participants. It is put together by Art Cluster Vienna, an association of around 25 of the city’s leading art institutions.
